Director
Joseph Cesario | Professor

I received my Ph.D. in 2006 from Columbia University, under the training of E. Tory Higgins, and came directly to MSU. I study social cognition: how we think about other people and groups. See the research page for a description of research projects.

Undergraduate Assistants

The education and training of our undergraduate research assistants is a priority for the lab. RAs experience every stage of the research process, from experimental design through data analysis and manuscript preparation. We also assist RAs with their graduate school applications and career choices.

Students who have been an RA for several semesters have the opportunity to carry out their own experiments in the lab.

We are grateful to have a history of outstanding RAs who have been engaged members of the lab. Click here to view a partial history of our lab. (If you don't see your name, email me to update the list!)

If you are responsible, motivated, and interested in gaining research experience, email to find out if any positions are available in the lab.

Undergrad
Scholars
McNair/SROP | IBSB | Honors Research

McNair/SROP students engage in an intensive graduate school preparation program which involves planning and carrying out their own research study. The programs prepare first-generation, low-income, and minority students for successful graduate education. Shayla Thrash was a McNair scholar from 2008-2010 in our lab. Megan Covington (2013), Romulus Castelo (2016), Matthew Bolton (2016), Brianna Benjamin (2017), and Pero Dagbovie (2018, 2019) have all been outstanding SROP scholars in our lab. See here for some comments on SROP.

We also have students conducting research for honors projects or simply as independent research, including: Christian Kotoye (2015-2017); Lucas Odom (2015-2017); Aubrey Stechschulte (2017,  PURI Award Winner); Thalia Maronto (2017-2018, Honors College Fund Winner); and Valerie Kemp (2017-2018, PURI Award Winner and 1st Place Poster Winner at UURAF).

The lab has also been a member of the Integrative Biology of Social Behaviors NSF summer training program. This summer program provides 10 weeks of research experience in laboratories studying biology and social interaction. We've been fortunate to have two outstanding IBSB scholars in our lab (Chelsea Osuji, 2015; Erica Ross, 2014).
